Project 1: Reading the Contexts of Traditional Streets
Brief: In this assessment, we are required to capture our virtual site visit observations towards the selected traditional street in an A4 sketch journal and a written summary. In-depth research of the selected street boundary is conducted to identify its physical contexts (e.x.: religious buildings, architecture facade, shophouses, and market) and non-physical contexts (e.x.: traditional trades, local cuisines, historical events, and social institutions).
Outcome: 10 pages of hand-sketched drawings (monochrome/multicolored) which include the written summary and defined boundary of the selected street.

SELF REFLECTION
With completing the first individual assessment, I was able to benefit from a variety of new things throughout the beginning of the semester as well as refresh my memory on things that I have learned before. I have learned more about the traditional street that is selected individually previously which is the Lorong Panggung in terms of the tangible and intangible architecture as well as the shophouse typology. In-depth research of the traditional street has led me to discover things that I never knew before especially the existence of traditional trades that has been operating for almost a century which are the Basket Shop that still sells authentic classic designed handcrafted baskets. I wish that I could spend time rendering the sketches and try to explore different media such as markers and watercolors to improve my graphic communication skills in expressing the contexts.
