Project 1a: Preliminary Studies

Brief: Aims to concentrate on urban studies to identify chances to promote architecture for place-making in the given setting. The task is divided into three parts: macro and microscale site analysis, and precedent studies of urban blocks and projects.

Outcome:
A. Urban analysis 8 to 10 x A3 Boards - All about a sense of place:

  • 1 to 2 x A3 = intro (such as situating KL in the context of Klang Valley & Malaysia) & macro (figure/ground, accessibility, land use, relevant statistics)

  • 1 x A3 = Lynchian analysis (macro/micro)

  • 3 x A3 = theorization of Medan Pasar. Use of an urban theory to illustrate a series of diagrams and sketches to frame a sense of place

  • 1 to 2 x A3 = urban walls 1:200/1:250 analysis

  • 2 x A3 = issues and inspirations

B. Precedent studies:

  • 2 to 4 x A3 = precedents. Two precedent studies – both fitted into 2 to 4 A3 boards

C. Design Statements/Position taking to design the Community Centre for a given site and situation

  • 1 to 2 x A3 = conclusion such as narratives, design intentions/statements, and questions pertinent to your design intent for the upcoming Final Project CCCC

SELF REFLECTION

WHILE COMPLETING THIS PROJECT, MOST OF THE TIME WE WERE STRUGGLING WITH WHAT TO DO EXACTLY AS IT WAS OUR FIRST TIME GETTING EXPOSED TO LEARNING ABOUT URBAN BLOCKS. HONESTLY, HAVING TEAM MEMBERS DO EVERYTHING TOGETHER WAS HELPING MUCH SINCE EACH OF US CONTRIBUTED TO GATHERING PIECES OF INFORMATION.
