Project 1: Human-Space-Climate-Building

Brief: - Discover the strategies that encourage effective environmental design principles and                     building practices.

           - Manipulate the variables such as heat, light and ventilation to achieve optimum                               building design.

           - Appraise passive building design strategies used to achieve thermal comfort in tropical                 climate.

Outcome: Two A3 boards filled with shading and lighting researched information such as :

                  - Floor plans and building sections

                  - Temperature, humidity, ventilation, daylight factors, lighting contour, sun path                                analysis

                  - Typology of the chosen buildings spaces and the basic building design that was used                      or should be used for hot and humid climatic considerations using UBBL, MS1525                            and GBI strategies.

                  - Building design strategies and passive building design strategies with relevant                                  research and case studies.

SELF REFLECTION

Through this assignment, I have learned the importance of practicing sustainable design in building development. The aim is to balance our economic, environmental, and social needs, allowing prosperity for now and future generations.

These are applied across all sectors of development, including:
  • urbanization
  • agriculture
  • infrastructure
  • energy use
  • water availability
  • transportation

My value in terms of practicing sustainable architecture is that we should believe that people can make a difference in changing this world into a better place. I believe that our common goal is to wish that our Earth become a better place for us to live and also let the future generation live happily. The step that everyone misses when trying to make a difference in this world is the action part. We get stuck in overthinking, opinions from our network, and dreaming about a perfect idea. We all have to contribute in some way in order to make our world a safer and less chaotic place. And the first step would be to become better individuals ourselves by making a small contribution to sustainability practices such as reduce, reuse and recycle; greening the planet by planting trees; conserving water; adopting renewable energy methods if it is affordable such as a solar panel.

We are in debt to the planet and it's only getting worse. As an architecture student, I have been thinking that we should start considering simple sustainable strategies that can be incorporated into building design. The first step to start being a sustainable architect is that we should learn the term minimalism. We should avoid designing unnecessary designs that might increase energy consumption and contribute to material waste. It is important to practice restraint and make sure that we build responsibly. Retaining structure and reusing materials is a great way to start thinking about sustainable design. This ensures that there is a reduction in resource consumption as a whole.
